The SkyRide is the quickest way to see Spokane Falls from above. A six-person gondola cabin leaves the park, drifts out over the Spokane River, and sinks about 200 feet into the gorge, passing under the Monroe Street Bridge on the way.

The whole trip takes roughly 15 to 20 minutes round trip. You see the Upper and Lower Falls, the old rail and power buildings along the river, and the Art Deco city hall tower on the way back up.

It works as a first stop. After the ride you will know where the falls are and which side of the river you want to walk.

What to see and do

The drop into the gorge

The cabin descends about 200 feet over Huntington Park and the river, which gives the best sense of how deep the falls cut through the rock.

Under the Monroe Street Bridge

The route passes below the 1911 concrete arch bridge, a good chance to photograph its curve from underneath.

Falls from above

You see both the Upper and Lower Falls and the rock islands between them.

Downtown skyline

On the way up you look back at the Art Deco City Hall and downtown towers.

Weather-proof cabins

The cabins are enclosed, so rain does not stop the ride, though they are not heated or air conditioned.

Local tips

  • Go in March through June for the strongest water. The city says that is when the falls look most dramatic.
  • In summer ride early. The ride can close in high wind or when it is over about 90 degrees, and cabins heat up.
  • Cabins hold up to six people, so a small group usually rides together.
  • Ride at the start of your visit, then walk down to Huntington Park or the bridge for a second look.
  • Not ideal if you are afraid of heights or tight spaces; the cabins are small and the drop is steep.
  • Children 15 and under must ride with an adult (18+).
  • Prices and hours change. Check the Riverfront Spokane website for the current list before you go.

A little history

A cable ride has crossed the falls since Expo '74, when Spokane hosted a world's fair on the same riverbank. It stayed a popular piece of the park after the fair ended and has been updated over the years. Today's cabins are enclosed, accessible gondolas.

The ride is run by the City of Spokane as part of Riverfront Park, and the name comes from a sponsorship deal. In 2013, travel publications listed it among the top scenic cable rides in the world, according to the downtown business group.
