Kendall Yards is Spokane's newest neighborhood, and the one that feels most like a place to walk around in. It sits on a bluff just northwest of downtown, with the Spokane River below and the city behind you.

It is a mix of shops, restaurants, apartments and townhouses, built around a trail corridor. You can eat, then walk the Centennial Trail along the river, then cross the Sandifur Memorial Bridge for a different view.

It works best in the evening. Pick a restaurant, take the trail for a sunset walk, and end at an outdoor table. Give it two to three hours.

What to see and do

The Centennial Trail

The Spokane River Centennial Trail runs along the edge of the neighborhood. It is paved, popular with walkers and cyclists, and the easiest way to see the river.

A footbridge that carries the Centennial Trail over the Spokane River. It gives a good view of the water and the cliffs.

Kendall Yards Night Market

A few blocks of Summit Avenue are closed to cars on Wednesday evenings, spring through fall, for a night market.

Restaurants and ice cream

The district has sit-down restaurants, casual spots, a grocery and shops along Summit Parkway, most with patios facing the river. Check current hours before you go.

The bluff views

Walk the edge of the bluff for views down to the river and across to downtown.

Local tips

  • Go in the evening for the light and the energy. Wednesday brings the night market, spring through fall.
  • Park in the neighborhood, then walk. There is plenty to see within a few blocks.
  • Pair it with Riverfront Park and the Monroe Street Bridge, which are a short walk away.
  • Bring a layer. The bluff gets breezy after sunset.
  • Restaurants fill up on weekend evenings, so book ahead if you care about a table.
  • Walk the Centennial Trail farther along the river for a longer outing.
  • Check each restaurant's current hours before you go.

A little history

The land was the Kendall Rail Yard, in use from the 1880s until the early 1970s, and then sat empty for decades. A development plan from Greenstone Corporation was approved in 2010, and the neighborhood has grown westward across the old rail yard since then.

It is part of West Central, one of Spokane's older neighborhoods, and it has changed how people use that side of the river. Monroe Street ties it directly to downtown.
